Description of Santa Eulalia del Rio

It is the 3rd largest resort on Ibiza and is a smart, pretty and cosmopolitan resort and couples and families with older children love this former rich market town.

There's a relaxing boat trip to a nearby island which lets you top up your tan while the island's east coast drifts by. Wade the short distance from the anchored boat to the dazzling white beach and enjoy a day of games and champagne diving.

Church Puig de Missa

The Puig de Missa Church sat high on top of a hill can be easily seen as you enter Santa Eulalia del Rio.

The church is the number one tourist attraction, having a simple yet extraordinary beauty.

Next to the church is a beautifully kept cemetary and a museum.

After visiting the church I recommend visiting the Old Bridge then walk down to the beach on the riverside walk

Town Hall in Santa Eulalia

The Town Hall is fronted by a colonade of arches with the words Casa Consistoral carved in stone above one of the arches.

On the Town Hall wall under the colonade look for The Face

The Face

The Face is a very deceiving carving on the wall of the Town Hall. The Face looks like a normal carving of somebodies face, but this is an illusion. The carving does not stick out from the wall, but is carved deep into the wall, so that the tip of the nose is the deepest recession into the wall.

You will notice that The Face has been well prodded by fingered to check it out.

The eyes of The Face contiue to stare directly at you as you walk by.

Placa Espanya & PG. de Salamanca

In front of the Town Hall is the main Square, Placa Espanya, fringed with trees. Beyond this is the PG. de Salamanca

A very pleasant wide boulavard with a central tree lined park, PG. de Salamanca, that leads right down to the sea front & the beach.

Old Bridge Pont Vell, Santa Eulalia

An old stone bridge over the river (Rio) which does not have a name. The river, a stream in Summer is the only one on the Balearic Islands.

The stream is vitually non existant above the bridge in summer

The river  (river is Rio in Spanish) is part of the name of the town, Santa Eulalia del Rio

River (Rio) Walk, Santa Eulalia

The walk between the Old Bridge and The beach should not be missed. It is extremly picturesque and streaming with wildlife especially water birds of which there are over 150 species.

Bucket Elevator Water Wheels in Santa Eulalia

There are 2 waterwheels in Santa Eulalia the one on the sea front is more impressive and is working, although by electricity instead of being turned by a donkey or other animal.

The water mills were used to lift water to a higher level. They could be powered by an animal or a standard water wheel

Beaches in Santa Eulalia

There is a clean, sandy beach backed by an attractive promenade lined with palms and oleanders. The sand is soft, the sea is crystal clear and the beach shelves gently - it's excellent for swimming and watersports, including sailing and windsurfing.

Shopping in Santa Eulalia

Throughout the summer there's a hippy market in the main square - the Ramblas - every day except Sunday. A unique part of Ibicencan culture, it's the ideal place to browse for gifts and souvenirs. Look out for Ibicencan pottery.

Nightlife in Santa Eulalia

The style is quality rather than quantity. The writers and artists who established Santa Eulalia as a colony for foreigners have left a legacy of cafés, bars and restaurants rather than nightclubs and discos, of chat rather than song.

Restaurants in Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia has more places to eat, large and small, than you'd expect in a town of its size. Take a seat at one of the cafés and while away a few lazy hours over coffee and Ibicencan cheesecake. Visit the street the locals call the Tapas Street - this is the place to sample authentic Spanish food. Try Gazpacho: a spicy soup made with tomatoes, green peppers, garlic, onions and cucumber.
